I went to see Jenufa at the Royal Opera House last night. I have to say: I really didn't enjoy it. It was just dull.

A couple reasons why might be the melodrama (though, it is an opera), the lack of any distinction, by which I mean any point where it sort of stops and focusses on one thing - instead, it is almost three hours of bustle and noise. The level of detail was too much in my opinion; it almost got into the weeds a bit much (then again, many people might like that; I don't really think opera is the right format and would prefer that in a book). Also, a lot of the dialogue was repeated, where they would say the same thing, two, three times. Overall, long, and a bit tedious. I found myself making sarcastic comments about it in my head to help pass it by a bit quicker.

It's a bit of a shame, but I think it's useful nonetheless. The first two I've seen I've absolutely loved (bar one scene in Eugene Onegin). This third one is not my cup of tea. Learning experience. Maybe I'll come to like it down the line, who knows. I could use it to try to work out what I like, and what I don't, in an opera.
