Interests

As I mentioned on the corresponding blog post, I've got a fair few interests, some of which are small and just adjacent to my main interests.

Major interests

Music

I somehow manage to like to play music but not actually be very good at it. I play the mandolin, and want to play the violin too. I also have played a bit of guitar. I am no good on any of these instruments. Still, it occupies my day and is quite fun!

Languages

I have liked to learn languages for probably a decade now. The first language I learnt was German, and then I started learning Polish and Norwegian. I dropped Norwegian as it was too easy (though I still know a little bit) and dropped Polish as I didn't find it a very attractive language (and have since forgotten most everything, teraz nie umiem rozumiec po polsku). I started on Japanese during my sixth form to distract me from school, and am still not very good at that either. Now, I am trying to learn Italian and Latin.

Gardening

I enjoy gardening, but again am not very good at it. I have an allotment I tend to, and also enjoy looking after the garden a bit. I am not always great at it mainly as I don't put the time into it, and occasionally end up missing important dates. Still, it is fun to do, whether or not the result is all that impressive or not.

Reading

I enjoy reading, and often read a few books a month. I read on all sorts of topics just really as they take my fancy. I (like a lot of people) don't read as fast as I buy books though, so I've got a decent backlog of things to read sitting on my bookshelf.

Journalling

I don't know if I would call this an interest - it is just something I do. I tend to write whenever I get a spare moment or a thought in the journal, and nowadays it has become somewhat of a dependency for me. I've also got a diary where I can write what happened during the day without all the rest of the nonsense I write, but I'm pretty inconsistent about actually writing it.

Philosophy

I don't know enough about it. But, I have in my mind the conception of a monad, or an absolute, and I want to understand it. Recently, going to the Hare Krsna temple made me think about a personal God. I've always treated the personal God as a metaphor, but maybe there is something more in it. I don't know.

Opera

A recently discovered one, but I really enjoy them!

Programming

I don't know where to put this. I used to enjoy it far more than I do now; I still like it though, even if I am not great at it and haven't really built much of anything. But I still try! For instance, this website is generated from static files using a Zig program I wrote). I want to re-write this script in C++ soon, and add support for generating the index files (currently either generated by a sh script or are done manually) and make tags actually work.

Minor interests

Linux and free software

I don't know if I would call this an interest anymore; it is just what I use. I of course try to avoid proprietary software and the like, and mainly use Linux, free software etc.

Fountain pens

This again isn't a major interest exactly, it's just what I use. I enjoy writing with fountain pens and definitely wouldn't go back.

Digital minimalism

I am not always very good, but I try to be more minimal with my digital life. I will write about it properly in a blog post, but essentially I don't really want to use computers.
