Hope Valley

These are the pictures from Hope Valley, which we visited 25th September until the 1st October. It was quite enjoyable, and we got a fair bit done. The views are lovely.

As the place goes, cannot recommend it enough.

2023-09-25: we arrived

On this day, we simply arrived, unpacked all our items, and went about the local church at Hope. We noticed that many of the graves had the same surnames as those on the current electorate roll - the graves date back into the early eighteenth century some of them - such an intimate connection with one's past must be incredible!

Also noticed, was that one of the graves has Jane Eyre on it - I wonder if somehow that is related to the book by Bronte of the same name?

2023-09-26: Ladybower Dam

On the second day, on the recommendation of a local we talked to at the pub where we stayed, we went up to Ladybower Reservoir. I believe we walked the whole way there. We went through a nice little trail, up to the dam, and came out by the sign for Heatherdene car park. Sitting a while for lunch, we carried on, and made it to the peak (if anyone knows the name of the peak in question, please let me know). Then we went home and ate dinner at the other pub across the road - I had a linguini (quite nice - I had the same dinner all week, started out not liking olives, by the end of the week really liked them) and we rested our feet for the night.

Rest

View from the hotel
The view from the pub. Save the car park, it's downright exquisite.
'Shrooms
Mushrooms on the side of the road, as we walked to the Dam.
Osprey Carving
An osprey. Sadly we didn't have any fish on us.
Koala?
It's either a koala or a pine marten. I've no idea to be honest.
Vision for Thornhill
Vision for Thornhill. I'd love to see the red squirrel return.
Ladybower Reservoir
The view from Lady Reservoir.
Ladybower Reservoir
The same view - you can see the big overflow in the corner.
Destination
That's where we were headed.
Ladybower Dam Tower
One of the towers at the dam. The background is nice too.
Dam
Looking back, the start of the dam is on the left.
Overflow
The second overflow. I imagined a skateboarder going round each of the rungs of it.
Overflow with view
The second overflow again. You can see the first one ahead as well.
Start of our route
The start of our route up to the peak.
Cool forest
This forest is downright cool.
Cool forest
See? Downright cool.
Rock
A rock in the middle of the path.
View partway up
The view partway up. It's gotten a little foggy.
Ferns, heathers, and rocks
The landscape here is all ferns, heathers, and rocks.
Heathers
Lots of heather. It's ling I think. It's lost its colour though.
View of Dam
Looking back.
Adjacent Hill
The hill on the opposite side of the dam. Not sure what it is, if anyone knows please tell me.
Light rays
I feel as if Jesus himself might descend upon us with this view.
Rocks
Rocks from the summit. Give it a few thousand years, this view will be totally different.
Summit
Another view from the summit.
C-shaped tree
An interesting tree I spotted on the way back down.
Ericaceous soil
The soil up the top of the peak. You can tell just by looking that it's acidic.

2023-08-30: Church Book Fair and Wet Walk

This was our last day of the holiday. We had our breakfast at the usual place, then went to the church. We saw the sign had updated - the book fair was in the old school hall, and the times had changed, so we didn't have long. We went to the old school hall, perused the books - I got four, and some redcurrant jelly (in the lovely glass pots homemade jellies come in - it was delicious, of course). Then, we went on a small walk up a path by the bus stop, saw some really good-looking chickens (one was black with red spots - maybe a Black Star?) a couple of lovely horses, then had to turn back a different way as that was getting onto private land. We went a little while, then turned back as it was too wet and the path was slippy.
